Dayton Urges Ban on Deadly Carcinogen
Joins Senator Patty Murray In Introducing Bill That Would Ban Asbestos
WASHINGTON, DC – Senator Mark Dayton today joined fellow Senator Patty Murray (D-WA) in introducing a bill that would ban asbestos, a carcinogen that results in at least 2,000 deaths nationwide each year.
Appearing at a press conference with Lt. Col James Zumwalt, whose father Admiral Zumwalt died of an asbestos-induced form of cancer known as mesothelioma, Dayton and Murray announced the re-introduction of the Ban Asbestos in America Act.
"[Asbestos is] an environmental weapon of mass destruction that we've allowed, like a time bomb, to continue to emit its poison and destroy lives and families and cause indescribable suffering," Dayton said.
From 1938 to 1989, asbestos contaminated vermiculite from Libby, Montana was shipped all over the country, including to the Western Mineral plant. Dayton said that at least 180 homes in Minneapolis took free rock from Western Mineral.
The Ban Asbestos in America Act:
- Bans the manufacture, processing, importation and distribution of asbestos-containing products
- Requires the EPA to convene a Blue Ribbon Panel to examine asbestos and non-asbestiform minerals and other durable fibers; review current laws and rules in place to protect workers and consumers, making recommendations for improving protections; and address the need for uniform asbestos standards and protocols for detecting and measuring asbestos across federal agencies
- Requires a study on asbestos-containing products and contaminant-asbestos products
- Requires a public education campaign to increase awareness of the dangers posed by asbestos-containing products and contaminant-asbestos products
- Requires additional research on mesothelioma
